Bai Daeng, Bai Dam (Red Card, Black Card)

Synopsis

In Thailand all male adults are eligible for conscription. Follow an eclectic group of ladyboys, monks, straights and misfits as they try their luck in the annual military card-draw lottery.

Around the world, many countries have unique approaches to national service and conscription, but Thailand’s system of compulsory military service is another story altogether. Amazingly, in Thailand all male adults, even monks and transgender males (also known as ‘katoey’ or ladyboys) are eligible for conscription. Annually, each April, hundreds of military draft lotteries are held across Thailand where thousands of potential draftees must take their chances in a uniquely Thai card draw system: draw a black card - avoid the draft, draw red - prepare for two years of active military service.
